Culture and Anarchy is a series of essays by Matthew Arnold. According to his view advanced in the book, "Culture is a study of perfection". His often quoted phrase "[culture is] the best which has been thought and said" comes from the Preface to Culture and Anarchy The whole scope of the essay is to recommend culture as the great help out of our present difficulties; culture being a pursuit of our total perfection by means of getting to know, on all the matters which most concern us, the best which has been thought and said in the world, and, through this knowledge, turning a stream of fresh and free thought upon our stock notions and habits, which we now follow staunchly but mechanically, vainly imagining that there is a virtue in following them staunchly which makes up for the mischief of following them mechanically. The book contains most of the terms - culture, sweetness and light, Barbarian, Philistine, Hebraism, and many others - which are more associated with Arnold's work influence.

Considering the state of our current political affairs, the book was a pleasant surprise. The style is very much of its time, and may seem circuitous and precious to a modern reader. But it IS a keen essay on the forces shaping English social thought at the
time, and a lot of what Arnold says applies to our nation today--the deep divisions, the treasuring of party over society, the moronic worship of money and growth over humanity. It is an honest attempt to get us to think about why we think and act as we do. He attempts to ask us to reconsider our rush to self-destruction for the sake of ideology, stereotyping, and fear.

Culture and Anarchy edition by Matthew Arnold Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I love diversity.
Fascinating look at the historical meaning of Culture. I highly recommend it to any thinking person who wants to understand today's world and how we got where we are.
Great!!!
The text is full of superscripted stars referring to notes in the back. It looks like a meddlesome editor had to justify his salary. Readers of Matthew Arnold would not need to look up, e.g., Milton or Virgil, and even if they did, nowadays there's the internet. There are hardly any useful references they are either for things that are obvious or for obscure people or places that are sufficiently introduced by the author himself to the extent they are necessary for understanding. I can't stand stuff like this.
This era needs to be reminded of the value of culture to expand and elevate our individual and collective sights, so this set of essays (ca. 150 pages) by Matthew Arnold from 1869 needs to be read, pondered, and inspire thoughtful reform. Clear print in this handy volume; well edited with thorough end-notes; sturdy, handsome binding.
Culture and Anarchy is one of the most important essays of the Victorian artistic mentality. It is a perfect companion to all of Ruskin's work and is a beautiful commentary on the artistic thought of the day .
The kindle edition is NOT the Oxford World's Classics edition of the book. Marketing it as such is fraud. should exercise more oversight of what it sells. It is simply an antiquated edition available free from Google or the Internet archive. Don't be conned.
