State of Decay An extreme horror eBook Matt Shaw Matt Hickman Reviews
Spooky not for the faint of heart
Won't waste the time reviewing this one...he's usually so much more imaginative.
The rape scenes were a lot. Wasn't prepared for that. Not sure if they were even completely necessary to the plot.
If you didn't suffer with a phobia of going to the dentist before reading this book, it's a sure bet you will have developed a damn righteous fear afterward. As usual, Matt Shaw has shown the twisted, dark side of the human condition. The place where all of us have imagined going at one point or another, if even just briefly.
I love that he writes with such feeling, the events in the book are written so descriptively that I find myself almost transported into the scenes of whatever I'm reading at that moment. A true talent in not only the horror genre, but as a literary figure overall.
As always, Matt Shaw and Matt Hickman send shivers down your spine with one of many people's phobias, going to the dentist. You always cringe when you hear that awful drilling and can't stand the picking at the teeth and gums. It's a nasty job even for the dentist. Having to clean nasty mouths and smelling nasty breath. I'm all set. I
I really liked the concept of a dentist being a vigilante. I'm used to the stories of movies about killer dentist's such as "Dr Giggles" where he is just a nut case. I wasn't expecting several situations to happen. I try not to give any give-a-ways. Let's just say, things get a bit twisted and out of control.
I enjoyed reading this book.
I have never left such a brutal review before - I always try to be fair and understanding of what the author is trying to portray. But, this book was just simply terrible. I sincerely believe my 13 year old son could have written a more coherent novella. There were endless spelling errors, an insane number of grammar problems and through most of the book, I had no idea what the author was trying to do or say. I am not joking here in several points of the book, there would be page after page after page after page of dentistry terms and procedures. Written as though it was straight out of a dentistry textbook. Boring beyond comprehension & totally misplaced in this novel, absolutely no reason for it. It seemed to be inserted to do nothing more than fill in a bunch of pages to make the book seem longer. The author even forgot the names of his characters! One character was "Maria" throughout the book, but at one point (without reason) she was called "Marie". I actually began highlighting the spelling, capitalization, punctuation and grammar errors just for fun. Roughly counting, in just 20 pages, there were around 14 errors - some so significant that no one beyond a high school education should make.
I understand this is a British novel, so I'm not even including the British differences in language and spelling of some words (Kerb instead of curb) (centre instead of center) - those are fine, I see this all the time in books & I fully understand them. I am purely talking about flat out spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes & complete overall lack of editing. "Jack cut of her off".
Anyway, I digress... I read a lot of books, including quite a few in this genre (so it's not the genre that threw me off), but I have to say that this was so poorly written that it took away from the actual content itself. There was obviously no editing, which makes it difficult to enjoy any book. The purpose of reading a book is to be entertained or to learn something. But when a book is written so poorly and with so many errors, it truly reduces the content down to drivel thrown on a piece of paper to earn a few bucks from the unsuspecting public.
I hope I can expect better books from Matt Shaw. This was the first book of his that I have read. But, I never exclude any author from my just because they produced one bad novel, so I have actually already purchased a few other books of his (Infestation & The Devil's Guests) and I will read them in the coming weeks before I form a firm opinion for Matt Shaw and his talents as a writer. I sincerely hope that State of Decay is an anomaly and he has more to offer than this. But I was extremely disappointed in this one, it was just a terrible book.
Excellent book great read I enjoyed the book. I was hoping the doctor lived wanted to see more vigilante murders, but overall great book.
The story was good. Two of my favorite authors together. Cringe worthy. I recommend this book to all fans of modern horror.
